Starting a freelance makeup business

by Trishani Pillay, May 02, 2017

Did you ever want to start a new business in the makeup industry and was unaware of where to start and what steps to follow? Don’t worry I have all the steps needed. Let’s get straight to it.

Step 1: NETWORK.

Networking is an important marketing tool that every business needs. The makeup industry is very competitive and the only key that will set your business of the ground is word of mouth. In this case, talk to people, network, make new contacts and most importantly build relationships.

Step 2: BUILD YOUR MAKEUP KIT

Start by deciding what makeup products you want in your kit. Products can be from a variety brands but good quality is ideal. The following products will be needed at the start:

  • A brush set
  • Minimum of four (4) foundations
  • Setting powder
  • Eye shadow
  • Blush
  • Lipsticks/lip gloss
  • Mascara
  • Eyeliner
  • Falsies
  • Skin care
  • Primer
  • Tools (eyelash curler, glue, sponges, tester wands and a mixing tray)

Step 3: ORGANISE YOURSELF

Once clients book appointments you would need to note these details down. Make sure you know what the wedding theme is and what the bride desires. Remember that one upset bride can cause harm to your business and reputation. If your memory is bad make notes about what the bride asks you for.

Step 4: START ADVERTISING

By getting your networking skills on because now you want to advertise and let people know about your business. Start a Facebook page and upload pictures of your work and link it to your website. You might even be surprised by the amount of clients you will get from your social media. It’s important to always be and remain professional. Do something extra/ go the extra mile so your clients will remember you.

Step 5: ESTABLISH PRICES AND CREATE A PRICE LIST

Deciding on a price list will vary depending on the job and location. You may want to charge per hour. Special rates could apply for more clients you may have in a day. Prices should reflect your work. Informing clients on the variation in prices will save the hassle for explaining later.

Step 6: MAKE A BUSINESS NAME

Choose a name that people will remember you by and it should be something easy to pronounce. The name should relate to you and what work you do. And lastly, make sure the name you have chosen isn’t taken.

Step 7: BUILD A PORTFOLIO

It is your resume of the makeup industry. Create a portfolio containing images of your best work as this will showcase your talent and helps attract new customers. This is the best way to attract new clients for your freelance business.
